It all started on the island of Vashon, where Ivonne helped her dear friend, María Fé , create natural creams and herbal infusions under their brand, Vanica – Vashon Botanics . Their beginnings were marked by experimentation, herbs grown in their garden, and a shared passion for natural skincare.
But we quickly noticed a recurring problem: the supply of high-quality carrier oils.
Why Kenyan avocado oil?
Why South African grape seed oil?
Why is borage oil sourced from China?
Why choose Ukrainian or Argentinian sunflower oil?
We grow all these plants right here in the United States , and we know local producers. Yet, most distributors only offer imported versions of oils that we produce locally.
That’s when the question became obvious: why not produce the carrier oils ourselves? And what oils could we produce from local crops?
Building from scratch: the seed dryer
We didn’t start by buying prefabricated equipment or outsourcing the most difficult tasks. Instead:
Erin and Bob designed and built our own seed dryer.
We rented a space on a friend’s property.
With the help of friends, we made and developed the tumble dryer ourselves.
We tested, adjusted, and learned through trial and error.
During the first harvests, Bob and Erin lived in Whatcom County for two months straight , drying raspberry seeds as they arrived. Erin drove to the farms to collect the seeds, and Bob ran the dryer tirelessly.
It was manual and exhausting work, but it laid the foundation for everything that followed.
From drying to pressing the seeds
Once the high-quality dried seeds were ready, the next step was to press them. But the lack of space was a problem : Vashon Island had no affordable premises to set up a food-grade pressing unit.
So we set up a warehouse in Tukwila, Washington.
Erin and Bob commuted daily, often working 12-hour shifts to keep the seed press running 24/7. Every step — pressing, filtering and bottling — was done by hand with precision and care.
For eight years , we pressed every drop of oil ourselves in Tukwila, learning and perfecting our know-how with each batch.

Returning home to Vashon Island
After nearly a decade, we made a significant commitment: we built our own warehouse on Vashon Island in 2018.

With the help of Joy and Matt, Erin and Bob built a food-grade facility on the property, including a cleanroom for filling, a storage area for seeds, a packing and shipping room, and a pressing room with just enough space to maneuver the forklift.
